2007 Massachusetts Historical Commission Preservation Award
2007 Boston Preservation Alliance Preservation Award
In 2005, the Facilities Department of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston and Gate of Heaven Church commissioned McGinley Kalsow & Associates LLP to design needed repairs and restorations to the Gate of Heaven Church. The building is designed in a Romanesque style, and features a unique buff colored Roman brick and brownstone trim, a slate roof, and copper flashing and roofing elements, including a copper-clad spire.
Work involved cleaning, pointing, and selective rebuilding of masonry; selective replacement of slates and replacement of all copper flashings, gutters, and downspouts; restoration of stained glass windows; preparation and painting of all exterior wood; structural repair of the spire and new electrical and mechanical systems. The Sanctuary’s vibrant interior paint scheme was restored and plans developed for a new Chapel and Fellowship Hall.
