Frederick Ayer Mansion
Boston, Massachusetts
The Ayer Mansion, in Boston's Back Bay, is the only residential design of Louis Comfort Tiffany still extant in which the artist tied the interior and exterior in design theme. Recently designated as a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service, the building displays spectacular stained glass and mosaic surfaces using convention-breaking techniques and materials pioneered and mastered by Tiffany.
McGinley Kalsow & Associates guided efforts to restore finishes in the interior spaces which were concealed under layers of paints and wall coverings. The highlight of the restoration involved uncovering and meticulous reconstructing and repairing the intricate 24-foot lay light that had been concealed for fifty years. Original finishes were restored in the main foyer, mezzanine windows and in the four story skylight-well/atrium space.
